What goes into the cost of an interview

The headline cost most people miss is interviewer time. Every interview bills the salary of everyone on the panel for its full length — plus, in reality, the prep and debrief around it. The cost per interview is length (hours) × interviewers × loaded hourly rate; multiply by interviews per hire to get the cost of filling one role, and by hires per year for the annual total.

This calculator counts interviewer salary time only. A full cost-per-hire also includes recruiter time, sourcing tools, job ads, and referral bonuses — but interviewer time is usually the largest and most overlooked piece.

How to reduce interview cost without lowering the bar

Frequently Asked Questions

Counting interviewer salary time, a 45-minute interview with a 3-person panel at a $105/hour loaded rate costs about $236. Across 8 interviews to fill a role that's roughly $1,900 in interviewer time per hire — before recruiter time and tools.

Yes. Interviewers are paid employees, and the hours they spend interviewing are hours not spent on their own work. For high-volume hiring it's one of the largest hidden costs in the whole process.

Cut redundant interview rounds, use structured scorecards, keep panels small and focused, and screen earlier so only strong candidates reach late-stage interviews. Fewer, better interviews usually beat more interviews.
